Feature Overview

The SMS functionality gives restaurant brands another very powerful channel to engage with their customer base. For any Message, Offer, Loyalty Offer, Survey, Order Notification, or Account Verification, you can reach out to your customers with a text instead of (or in addition to) an email, push notification, and/or in-app inbox. Industry research has shown that SMS open and response rates are as high as 98% and 45%, respectively — whereas those rates are 20% and 6% for email communications! Because of this, we certainly advise our restaurant partners to try out SMS in order to more effectively communicate with their customers.

SMS Cost by Type

SMS Type Cost (as of January 2025)
Marketing $0.03 per message sent
Account Verification $0.03 per message sent
Order Confirmed (Any POS) $0.00 per message sent (FREE)
Order Complete (Toast & Tablet Only) $0.00 per message sent (FREE)

How to Enable SMS Marketing

In order to use this channel for your Messages, Offers, Loyalty Offers, or Surveys, please reach out to either support@incentivio.com or your Incentivio CSM.  * Please note this may require an app update.

We will need the following information:

  1. Restaurant Brand Name
  2. US EIN (TaxID) Number
  3. Business Type
  4. Legal Business Name
  5. Corporate Address
  6. Best point of contact for questions/verification

How to Use SMS Marketing

  1. For any Message, Offer, or Loyalty Offer, you will see "SMS" as an option in the "Channels" field within the "When" section. Within this field, simply click "SMS" to distribute the Message, Offer, or Loyalty Offer via SMS.
  2. After clicking "SMS" you will be prompted to specify if you want the text to be send to all customers who meet the Targeting Rules or a fixed number of customers.
    1. To limit the number of recipients without entering a fixed amount, consider narrowing down your audience by using more specific targeting rules. For example, rather than targeting "Everyone" you can target customers with a high average basket value or a low number of lifetime orders - or both!
  3. You will also see a new button beneath the SMS button called "Add Display Content". Here you will choose what the text message will say. You can provide a link to the full message in their web account by using the placeholder that reads "[#Message URL#]". You can click the "Message URL" button on the right to insert this placeholder within the message! Keep in mind that for every 160 characters, an additional text will get sent. NOTE: When using emojis, the character limit is 70 characters.

SMS Marketing Tips

  1. Include Yourself as the Sender: Identify that texts are coming from your restaurant and include your brand name in each SMS send.
  2. Share links from a branded domain (company website) that haven't been shortened and place the URL in between words. Or use the default [#Message URL#] which will take users to view the full display content in web.
  3. Don't include ALL CAPS anywhere.
  4. Limit your use of special characters ($).
  5. Include opt-out at the end of the message (i.e. reply stop to stop; text stop to unsubscribe; Msg&data rates may apply).
  6. Be mindful of grammar and spelling.
