Some of our POS partners, including Toast and Revel, do not allow brands to offer discounts on modifiers. This is due to limitations on their end, which don't recognize modifiers as valid targets for discounts.
However, we also recognize that discounting modifiers can be critical to brands' marketing strategy, encouraging guests to increase their average check value and driving orders. As a result, we have developed a "workaround" to this limitation, allowing brands to effectively provide discounts on modifiers.
Creating a Modifier Discount
The key to setting up a modifier discount is not targeting the modifier as the Discount Target; instead, the modifier should be targeted as a Qualifying Product, while the Discount Target is the main item. In short, the discount should essentially say, "Discount this main item if the customer has this modifier in their cart."
Additionally, the discount must be set up as an amount-based discount, not a percentage-based discount. This is because it will take the percentage off the main item, as it is the Discount Target, rather than the modifier.
For example, to set up an offer for free pepperoni on a cheese pizza, you would set up a discount for the amount of the pepperoni and target the items as seen here:
Important note: Ensure you uncheck Exclude Modifier Items on the modifier to ensure seamless redemption for guests. If this is checked, guests will not be able to redeem this offer.
