Using Open Discounts with Offers

Why We're Recommending Using Open Discounts

Today, every individual offer needs its own specific discount built in the POS. That specific discount is what grants permission to apply the offer at the register. This gets hard to manage as offer volume grows, and it's a common source of setup friction for less technical or lower-bandwidth clients.

The new model replaces per-offer discounts with two universal "open" discounts on any POS that supports open discounts. Instead of the POS carrying the specific offer name, staff will see a generic discount name (e.g., "Incentivio OpenCheck") on the check, and offer-specific detail lives in the Incentivio dashboard instead of the POS.

Current vs. New Model

Today New (Open Discount) Model
One specific POS discount built per offer Two universal POS discounts total (item-level + check-level)
Discount name on check matches the offer Generic discount name on check; offer detail reporting exists in Incentivio (Loyalty Pulse Overview)
New offer = new POS discount to build New offer = no new POS setup required

The Two Open Discounts You Need

  • Item-level open discount applies to a single item.
  • Check-level open discount applies to the entire check.

Both should be set up as fixed dollar-off discounts (not percentage), and both should be permission-gated so staff can't apply them without authorization.

Reporting & Validation Differences

Because the discount name on the check is now generic, staff and customers need to check Loyalty Pulse for which specific offer was actually applied — the POS alone won't show that detail anymore.

POS-Specific Best Practices

Toast

Setting Item-Level Open Discount Check-Level Open Discount
Discount type Dollar ($) off Dollar ($) off
Permission level Manager Manager
Discount color Grey Grey
Discount name Web-App – [descriptive name] Web-App – [descriptive name]
POS name zNOT FOR STORE USE zNOT FOR STORE USE

The "Web-App" prefix and grey color make these two discounts instantly recognizable and easy to filter out from a store's regular discount list. The leading "z" on the POS name pushes it to the bottom of any POS-side discount picker and signals to staff that it isn't meant to be manually selected at the register.

Modifier discounts: Direct modifier discounts don't work in-store on Toast. The workaround is to target the discount at the base item instead of the modifier itself. See Modifier Discounts for details

Dining options: Do not set dining options in Toast for this setup.
